Ziggy Marley, Beats Antique to play July 8 Town Park show

KOTO Community Radio is bringing reggae scion Ziggy Marley and electro-fusion band Beats Antique to the Town Park stage for its 2012 Doo Dah concert.
The Doo Dah will take place on July 8, a Sunday, with gates opening at 3 p.m. Tickets, which will be $30 in advance and $35 day of show, have yet to be released.
Jumpin’ Jan Zink, director of special events for KOTO, said the station is excited about the musical pairing of Beats Antique, a world-fusion electro-acoustic band that is just emerging onto the music scene, with Ziggy Marley, a veteran musician and well-loved performer.
“I think it’s going to be a good show,” she said. “It’s a really good match.”
The Doo Dah is an annual mid-summer concert organized by KOTO, Telluride’s non-commercial, non-underwritten community radio.
KOTO originally had July 13 penciled in as the date for the event, but asked for permission from the town to move the event after discovering that Ziggy Marley was playing in Copper on July 7, Zink said. The station then secured Beats Antique.
Marley, a five-time Grammy Award winning musician, activist and artist, is the son of musical legend Bob Marley.
The Kingston, Jamaica, native first sat in on recording sessions with his father when he was 10 years old. Later, Ziggy joined with his sisters Sharon and Cedella and brother Stephen to become Ziggy Marley & The Melody Makers, which allowed him to craft his own sound by blending blues, R&B, hip-hop and roots reggae.
The group went on to garner five Grammy Awards and produced several albums, such as “Conscious Party,” “Fallen is Babylon” and “Ziggy Marley & The Melody Makers Live, Vol. 1.”
Marley’s first solo tour came in 2002, and he released his debut solo album, “Dragonfly,” in 2003, with “Love is My Religion” following in 2006.
His music is marked by social and political themes woven with roots reggae, African percussion and rock and roll. He has played shows in Telluride, though not for years, and is a popular live act for his warmth and engagement on stage.
While Marley is a seasoned musician with years of touring under his belt, Beats Antique is a younger act that is just breaking into the music scene with gigs at festivals like Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits and Outside Lands.
The San Francisco trio, which is comprised of producers David Satori and Tommy Cappel and belly dance performer and producer Zoe Jakes, brings a unique blend of live instrumentation, electronic beats and seductive performance — merging modern production methods with antique musical traditions.
Satori and Cappel, who come with extensive backgrounds in multicultural music production, mash pop hooks, Middle Eastern sounds, Balkan wedding music, French gypsy jazz, classical Indian traditions, dub reggae and more — and tie these multicultural sounds together with heavy beats and sub bass.
Layered on top of the music is the live show, during which Jakes, a trained dancer, performs tribal belly dancing.
Historically, the Doo Dah is an evening event that features a big headlining act (past events have featured Lyle Lovett and Bob Dylan), but in recent years, the event has been scaled down to more of a community party-style event with multiple acts and cheaper tickets.
Last summer, KOTO brought Keller Williams and Rose Hill Drive for the summer concert. In 2010, the concert was tailored as an all day community celebration, with local band Joint Point, a performance by the Salt Fire Circus out of Durango and Boulder band The Motet capping off the evening.
The 2012 Doo Dah promises a return to the old format. Zink thinks it’ll be a great show.
“It’s going to be pretty cool,” she said.
Since the show is on a Sunday, KOTO is keeping it relatively early, with Beats Antique slated to play at 4 p.m. and Ziggy Marley to play at 6 p.m.
